The Meyer Levy Charitable Foundation and Jean L. Karotkin make the 6th Annual Summer Reading Institute a Reality for Area Youth

Times have been challenging but generosity still abounds. Thanks to the Meyer Levy Charitable Foundation and Jean L. Karotkin, the 6th Annual Earning by Learning Summer Reading Institute hosted by the University of North Texas Dallas campus, allowed area youth a rich summer learning experience. At 10, 11, and 12, children continue to get a chance to experience college life as well as a week long study in reading comprehension, vocabulary development, writing and the arts.

Skip Cheatham, with K104, KKDA AM 730 and KRNB 105.7 took time out of his busy schedule to share a message about making good choices. He spoke of his love for knowledge and how it has shaped his personal and professional life. According to Cheatham, encyclopedias were his best friends!

The Summer Reading Institute is the first of its kind in the southern sector of Dallas. Three years ago, the Earning by Learning/UNT Dallas Scholarship Fund was established. This scholarship provides monies to UNT Dallas students. Then UNT Dallas graciously matches those dollars and our young Summer Reading Institute participants are able to receive scholarships at the close of our weeklong Institute. It is what EBL and UNT Dallas call “tangible hope.” This year’s Summer Reading Institute Scholarship receipents are Marcus Villogemez, Delon Spencer-Williams, and Alexander Spencer Williams
