Changing the world sometimes starts in your very own backyard. Earning by Learning began with a small group of Dallas citizens who recognized a need for reading. Though the concept of EBL originated in 1990 by Newt Gingrich, the importance of children and reading are certainly bipartisan issues.
Dallas residents Francis and Lois Rudine knew that raising the stakes and offering monetary incentives for good grades, had worked with their children. They figured it would work in schools. Ed Fjordbak of Communities Foundation of Texas knew philanthropy. New Car Dealers Association of Metropolitan Dallas and Washington Mutual recognized that doing good is good business.
All had compatible values and believed that their partnership would be great for the city of Dallas. Each knew those tiny faces depended on adults to help them become literate and productive citizens. The partners raised the stakes. Today, children are expected to read and encouraged to read. - Reward children for the good things they do.
- Teach them that the harder they work, the greater the pay-off.
- Encourage children to read and think.
- Let children know that reading in its purest sense allows you to expect great things.
- Teach children fiscal responsibility.
Thirty-four thousand children later, with an integrated, stable partnership, everyone continues to agree that the message is simply.
"Get children reading and reading as early as possible. Help them to understand the benefits that it offers."
